Best Birthday!

 I asked Rie what she thought of her birthday celebration.  She said, "It was awesome"!

Many thanks to Rie's sister, AnneBerit, who organized the whole thing remotely, at times from airports on her way to Africa.  She had LaMadeleine deliver Rie's favorite coconut cake.  She also organized the "Tribute" video.  Many friends and family contributed.  See link below.


We were blessed in many ways.  In contrast to living in hospitals for five months, a quiet brunch with just Rie, Mia, and brother Foad reminded us of how we will never again take for granted the mundane, ordinary, "life-as-usual".  Jennifer and Jacob, our dearest friends of 20+ years, came over and helped us with some chores and some cheers!  They always remind us of the comfort that comes from special friendships.  We watched the "Tribute" video together.  It is a montage of pictures and video clips of friends and family from all over the world wishing Rie a happy birthday.  We ended the day with another quiet mundane ordinary boring uneventful gathering around the dinner table with just the four of us, celebrating Rie and thankful for "life as usual" and ice cream!

We were also blessed by God's presence.  A brief downpouring of hail was a reminder of His awesome power.  The freezing north wind He sent disinfected our grounds.  Then came the calm and the sunshine just in time for the birthday party when we felt His omnipresent love delivered from all around the world in a short video montage and via FaceTime.

Please pray that till her next birthday, Rie's unwavering love for the Lord is rewarded with the only thing Rie has ever asked for: the restoration of her bond with Mia.

12/12/23 Update

 Today is Mia's 16th birthday.  The three of us went shopping for clothes for her yesterday.  It was the first time in over two years that Rie shopped without a wheelchair, using just a standard quad walker.   It almost felt like a normal pre-stroke shopping day, including the backache I used to get whenever we went shopping for clothes! It’s been one year!

It’s been one year since Rie’s stroke on 7/30/2021. We’re thankful for the steady progress despite so many complications. Every apparent set back has proven to be a set up for something better. Praise the Lord! ❤️🙏
